Home again. Man, this seemed like a long week. Nick had been placed in a ward room - three other patients, but no one was into talking to us this time. Oh well. Can't blame folks for not being too chipper in the chemo ward.

Tanja's oldest and best friend Meredith (Mimi) flew in from Texas and paid us a visit at the hospital. Always great to talk to her. I keep getting additional details of Tanja's squirrel attack. Mimi and Tanja had been coming out of the house one hot day, and for whatever reason Mimi allowed Tanja to go first...    ...which put her throat directly along the squirrel's trajectory as it leapt from the garage room. Evidently, the squirrel not only tore at Tanja's throat, but also viciously lacerated her mouth with its razor claws, and left her bleeding heavily from the lips and gums. I still maintain that squirrels are, by and large, benevolent creatures, but I guess I can't really blame Tanja and Mimi for hating them.

Alex's grandparents showed up on the last day, and her grandmother, herself a cancer survivor, passed along a little medallion to Nick to encourage him through this (hopefully!) second-last cycle.

Nick's doing fairly well at home this time. He's been able to hydrate himself sufficiently by mouth to refuse intravenous hydration, and has not really been taking anti-nauseant medications. Of course, he hasn't left his bed the entire weekend, but compared with the usual hurling, he's doing great. One more cycle to go!

A segment of last week's CBC Sunday Edition (with Michael Enright), about happiness and success after leaving the Ph.D. program, caught my interest. I wrote them a letter, and Mr. Enright read it on this week's show. Hit the link below to hear this clip. I guess my mom's friend Cathy heard this all the way out in Vancouver.

 Sunday Edition Letter

We went to visit our long time family friend Donja at University Hospital today. She's been in hospital in Eliot Lake more or less continuously since August, awaiting heart surgery. They keep bumping her surgery dates, but at least this time she's in London, so it could finally happen at last. What a long road it's been for her. I don't think perogies fried up with bacon are exactly "heart-healthy", but what the hey.

Below is Donja reuniting with Aaron the Alligator after many a year.
